Spending time outside, engaging with nature and other people, learning new skills and finding a sense of purpose can significantly improve our wellbeing.
We’ve developed strong links with RHS Wisley to enable some of the families we support – who would not normally have the opportunity to access their gardens – to visit, and be inspired by, the gardens created there.
As part of our joint work, one of our team worked with RHS Wisley and some final year students at the RHS School of Horticulture to create a Froebel-inspired intergenerational community garden at our Hazel Avenue site. The project involved the family centre, our nursery school, Pond Meadow Special School, St Peter’s Church, members of the Froebel Trust and local parents to develop a community garden inspired by Froebel.
While the garden is still in its infancy and as more community groups get involved, we hope it will support and engage the whole community, bringing different generations together.
We also have high hopes that groups such as the mental health teams who use our indoor space may use the garden as part of their therapeutic sessions. It could even become part of a ‘green prescription’.
For more information, you can read this blog post and watch a short video about our community garden . Even better, come and join us on the second Wednesday of every month from 10.30am – 12pm for our community gardening and social group. We’re here in all weathers!
